Pharaoh Cicada t Japan (from Hokkaido to thePharaoh Cicada, also known as Magicicada septendecim, is a North American species of periodical cicada with a unique 17 year life cycle. As nymphs, they spend most of their lives underground, feeding on root fluids. Once they reach their 17th year, they emerge in large numbers to molt into adults, mate, and eventually die. This synchronized emergence overwhelms predators and ensures the species' survival. During their brief above ground period in late
